Douglas’ 21st Birthday Bash
Join us for a unique heritage railway celebration this summer as one of the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway’s most popular diesel locomotives marks a very special milestone. Douglas is turning 21, and you’re invited to celebrate with two exciting days of railway action, family fun and locomotive history on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 July.
Whether you’re a dedicated railway enthusiast, looking for family-friendly Lake District events, or searching for a memorable day out during the summer holidays, Douglas’ 21st Birthday Bash promises an unforgettable experience.
One of the Lake District’s Must-Visit Heritage Railway Events
There is great excitement across the railway as Douglas prepares to celebrate his 21st birthday surrounded by friends, colleagues and visitors from near and far. Since entering service more than two decades ago, Douglas has become a firm favourite with passengers travelling through the spectacular Eskdale Valley.
To mark the occasion, fellow diesel locomotives Lady Wakefield, Perkins, Les and Cyril will join the celebrations, creating a fantastic showcase of the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway’s diesel fleet.
Experience a Weekend of Diesel Locomotive Action
Visitors can enjoy an action-packed timetable featuring a variety of diesel-hauled services throughout the weekend. Locomotives will take turns hauling passenger trains, offering enthusiasts the opportunity to experience the unique character and capabilities of each engine.
The event timetable will include:
- Full line return journeys between Ravenglass and Dalegarth
- Additional diesel shuttle services
- Top-and-tail workings
- Multi-headed train formations
Standard return ticket holders can travel free on additional diesel services operating during the event (subject to availability), providing even more opportunities to enjoy the action and photograph the locomotives at work.
Steam and Diesel Trains Together in the Western Lake District
While Douglas takes centre stage, visitors will also be able to enjoy steam train services operating throughout the weekend. The combination of steam and diesel traction makes this one of the most varied and exciting heritage railway events in the Lake District calendar.
Whether you prefer the sights and sounds of steam or the distinctive character of diesel locomotives, there will be plenty to enjoy across both days.
The Story Behind Douglas the Diesel Locomotive
Commissioned by the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway Preservation Society in 2004, Douglas was named in honour of Douglas Ferreira, the railway’s longest-serving General Manager. Serving from 1961 until 1994, Douglas Ferreira played a significant role in developing the railway into one of the UK’s most loved heritage attractions and helping secure its future for generations to come. Today, the locomotive continues to carry thousands of passengers through the beautiful landscapes of the Lake District National Park each year.
See 100-Year-Old Quarryman in Action
As if one birthday celebration wasn’t enough, visitors will also have the opportunity to meet a much older member of the railway family.
The recently restored Quarryman, a rare narrow-gauge locomotive from the Ravenglass Railway Museum collection, is celebrating its centenary year. Following extensive restoration work and fundraising efforts, Quarryman will make a special appearance operating on the head shunt on Sunday afternoon.
This rare opportunity offers visitors the chance to see a remarkable piece of railway heritage in action during its 100th anniversary year.
Family-Friendly Summer Events in the Lake District
Douglas’ 21st Birthday Bash is more than just a railway enthusiast event. It’s a fantastic family day out in the Lake District, combining stunning scenery, heritage transport, fascinating railway history and the opportunity to ride behind both steam and diesel locomotives. Located on the coast of the Western Lake District, the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway offers one of the region’s most scenic journeys, making this special event an ideal addition to any summer holiday itinerary.
