Our closed carriages allow visitors to enjoy the Western Lake District scenery whilst providing complete protection from the elements. 

The closed carriages are separated into compartments for up to 4 and are perfect those wintry days out. The carriages have a sliding door that can be opened from both sides upon arrival at your destination.

'Ruth' Director Saloon

Built by the engineering team at Ffestiniog Railway CompanyRuth is a beautiful Director Saloon and the newest addition to our fleet, which can be hired privately for special experiences on the railway. With comfortable padded seats inside for eight people, semi-open balcony seating and a roof for two on each end. The space can be split into two separate compartments or can be hired as a whole carriage for up to 12 people. This carriage is wheelchair accessible.

The carriage has been named in memory of the Honorable Mrs Ruth Adorian, daughter of Sir Wavell Wakefield, founder of the current railway company that helped save the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway back in 1960.

Pullman Observation Carriage 'Joan'

A stunning Pullman Observation Carriage, providing panoramic views of the glorious coast and Western Lake District mountains with plush bucket seats and lots of extra room. Ideal for small groups, family, or friends. 'Joan' accommodates 14 passengers, with plush seating and panoramic views of the coast and mountains as you travel behind a heritage steam engine.

This carriage was named after the Honourable Mrs Joan Raynsford, daughter of Sir Wavell Wakefield, founder of the current railway company that helped save the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway back in 1960.

You can purchase day tickets and upgrade your seat or privately hire the whole carriage for up to 18 people.
