Railway cottage holidays at the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway have just got better! Hilton Cottage has recently undergone a major refurbishment. Bookings are now open.

Formerly the railway manager’s cottage, Hilton Cottage is located on platform 1 next to the carriage and wagon works. It is the third of the railway's quirky self-catering properties.

Benefitting from an extensive renovation, 'The Bungalow' as it’s affectionately known, now offers modernised self-catering accommodation in Ravenglass, perfect for railway cottage holidays. Given its location overlooking a steam railway line, this single-storey, two-bedroom heritage-themed hideaway will be a hit with railway enthusiasts. Enjoy staying at a heritage steam railway as well as exploring both the coast and country of the Western Lake District.

Inside Hilton Cottage...

  • Stepping inside, the railway cottage opens into the living and dining area. Taking creative inspiration from the golden years of rail travel, with museum-like additions that add character, the room features a dining area which invites you to linger over unhurried breakfasts and leisurely dinners. There are two sofas, one of which converts into a sofa bed and is positioned under the window so you can curl up and watch the trains arrive at the station, amid puffs of steam.
  • In addition to the electric radiators, the log burner keeps things cosy and warm. (An initial supply of logs is provided.) An iron and ironing board are provided.
  • Board games, cards and books are provided for relaxed evenings.
  • The contemporary kitchen boasts new appliances and all the essentials for holiday cooking, including an electric hob with a grill and oven, a full-size fridge, freezer and dishwasher, kettle, toaster and microwave, plus a wine cooler, meaning you can enjoy a perfectly chilled bottle alongside your meal.
  • The nostalgic detail continues in the bedrooms. The master bedroom overlooks the railway line and comprises a double bed and a convenient modern en suite shower room with a heated towel rail and handy shaver socket, while the second smaller bedroom faces the rear of the property and offers twin beds. In both bedrooms, you’ll find a TV and USB sockets.
  • At the end of the hallway, there’s a large, light modern shower room with a double walk-in shower, heated towel rail and shaver socket.

Outside our railway platform cottage

Outside our former station master's cottage, there is an enclosed small patio to the rear. This provides a private spot for a morning coffee or sundowner, with seating for four on two benches with handy pop-up tables. Step outside the front of the cottage onto the railway platform and you can watch the narrow gauge steam engines preparing to take passengers to Eskdale.

A railway cottage holiday in the Lake District

Head to The Ratty Arms pub, a short walk over the footbridge across the Cumbrian Coast Line. Savour the rich malty flavour of local ale with some delicious home cooking and friendly chat.

But, best of all, you can capitalise on Hilton Cottage’s location and step outside the front door, hop on a heritage steam train, and be at the foot of England’s highest mountains in 40 minutes. This unique self-catering accommodation in the Lake District National Park is ideally located for exploring the Cumbrian coast and Eskdale.
